On April 13, 2008, Michael's sculpture of the legendary George V. Brown, was unveiled at the MetroWest Symphony Orchestra Marathon Week Kickoff Concert. The sculpture was commissioned by the Hopkinton Athletic Association (HAA) with a grant from the state of Massachusetts. It is part of a larger effort to promote tourism in the MetroWest area based on the Boston Marathon, which starts in Hopkinton.
Brown (1880 to 1937), a lifelong Hopkinton resident, played an important role in the development of many sports in America and even worldwide during the early 20th century. He served as starter for the Boston Marathon for over 30 years and helped move the starting line for the event to the town in 1924. An all-around sports advocate, Brown was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame for his role in building the sport, held various positions with the US Olympics organization, was General Manager of the Boston Garden, and much more.
For marathon weekend 2008, from April 19 to April 21, the sculpture will be on veiw near the marathon starting line, on the Hopkinton Common. The hope is that the common will be its permanent home, where it can distinguish the start line year round and viewers can pose with the sculpture for photos.
